仕事柄アウトドア用のショートパンツは山ほど見てきた。機能を追求すると商品特徴も価格帯も
メーカーによる違いがなくなり画一的になる。海のトランクスにはザクっと割りきれたところが
あり、シンプルにして個性的で良いのだが、着心地に劣るところがある。もちろん全てを満たす
物などあり得ない。何かツボにはまったような物に出会えないだろうか、モヤモヤとした気分で
徳島県鳴門市にある山口縫製(NaltoTranks)の山口輝陽志を訪ねた。
「うちのトランクスは乾くのが早いわけじゃないで。」開口一番彼は僕に向かって言い放った。
擦れ直しのある着古されたトランクスを彼は履いていた。毎朝海に入ってそのまま車を運転して
仕事場へ出るという。一日中履きっぱなしにされたトランクスは本物のデイリーウエアだった。
決して乾きが早いわけじゃない。けれど素肌に履いたその肌触りの良さ、使っていくうちに体に
馴染む仕立て、過酷な使用に耐えるタフネスさ、これらは人の手で作られた物の特徴だと思う。
ローテクのサーフトランクスと言ってしまえばお終いかもしれない、しかし今現在世界のどこに
これを作れる人がいるだろうか。だが山口はそんなことを考えない。ただ黙々と縫うだけだ。

藍染めのナルトトランクスのグラフィックの題材を探していた頃、公園でブナのわくらば（病葉）
に出会った。枝についた多くはわくらばで驚いたと同時に納得もした。東京の公園だからという
訳ではなく、これが自然の姿であるように思えたから。世界の多様性はちっぽけな人間の考えで
は到底及ばない。そう思うとわくわくしながらコンビニ袋にわくらばを集めている自分がいた。
出家と申し旅といひ、泊りはつべき身ならねば、いづくを宿と定むべき、その上この須磨の浦に
心あらん人は、わざとも侘びてこそ住むべけれ。
〽わくらばに問ふ人あらば須磨の浦に 藻塩垂れつつ侘ぶと答へよ
と行平も詠じ給ひしとなり。又あの磯辺に一本の松の候を、人に尋ねて候へば、松風村雨二人の
海士の旧跡とかや申し候程に、逆縁ながら弔ひてこそ通り候ひつれ。ー歌曲『松風』
雲や水の様にさだめるところない旅の僧ですから、樹下石上を宿とし泊まるところに贅沢は言い
ませんよ。須磨の浦なんて風雅な心があれば、とりわけ侘び住いしたいところじゃないですか。
〽マジないと思うけど、聞いてくれるダチがいたならさぁ
ほとぼり冷めるまでスマのビーチで、ナミダ垂れながしてワビシー田舎暮らしってわけよ
と行平が詠んだ歌がありますよね。また浜辺の一本松を人に尋ねたら、松風村雨の二人の海士の
旧跡だそうですね。通りがかりの縁で回向してきましたよ。ー歌曲『松風』 意訳：立沢木守
〽わくらばに問ふ人あらば須磨の浦に 藻塩垂れつつ侘ぶと答へよ 行平
在原行平の和歌の冒頭の『わくらば（邂逅）』は、思いがけず出会うという意味の言葉で、この
サーフトランクスのグラフィックのモティーフである『わくらば（病葉）』とは別の言葉である。
しかし僕は古今和歌集のこの歌に、サーフトランクスに与えたいものが詰まっていると思った。
それは『もののあはれ』という無常観と美的理念だ。ブナのわくらばを採取したのは新緑盛りの
頃だった。気候もよく樹々は青々と生気に満ちた葉を実らせ輝いていた。しかしその葉の多くは
小さな穴が沢山空いるわくらばだった。僕はわくらばを行平中納言や光源氏に重ねて見ていた。
〽わくらばや大地に何の病ある 虚子
高浜虚子の句にある『わくらば』は病に侵された葉をいう言葉だ。何のというところが不気味だ。
エバに応じて禁断の果実を食べたアダムには『地』という意味があり、地が呪われた事によって
実りが減少し食料を手に入れるのに人間は労苦を強いられる。我々はエデンの園から追放された。
〽凶作や天地に何の呪いある 木守
人は過去幾度もそう思ってきた事だろう。神も楽園も人の頭の中にしか存在しないものではある。
けれど人はそれを外に有るものとして扱っていかないと、遣りきれない現実に置かれ続けている。
善悪の知識の実を食べた二人は、自分たちが裸である事に気づいてイチジクの葉で腰を覆った。
文明の歴史の実を食べた二人は、自分たちが人である事に気づいてわくらばのトランクスを履く。

徳島県鳴門市で1975年からスイムウエア、サーフトランクスを一枚一枚に心を込め丹念に縫製しているファクトリーです。量産品では得られない履きご心地には定評があります。
I have seen many outdoor trunks in my line of work. In terms of functionality, products are becoming homogenous with all manufacturers offering the same features at the same price. Beach shorts are slightly different with their simple design, but they can be uncomfortable to wear sometimes. Needless to say, it is impossible to have a product that meets all the criteria, but I was certain there is one out there that matches what I was looking for. Those things were going through my mind when I visited Kiyoshi Yamaguchi from Naluto Trunks in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture.
“Our trunks take a while to dry,” was the first thing he said to me. He was wearing a pair of worn-out trunks, which is a part of his daily outfit. Every morning, Kiyoshi goes into the ocean to surf and heads straight to work in his car after that, all while wearing the same pair of trunks. Even though it does not dry immediately, Naluto Trunks feels great against the skin and the fit becomes better as time passes. In addition, it is tough and durable. These are qualities that can only be achieved with items made by hand. Naluto Trunks may be “low-tech surf trunks,” but there are very few people left in the world who can make such trunks these days.

While searching for patterns to use on indigo-dyed Naluto Trunks, I came across some diseased leaves (wakuraba) of a beech tree in a park. I was surprised to see that most of the branches were affected by the disease, but at the same time, it made sense to me because I recognized that it was the true form of nature. The world’s diversity is not something that petty humans like us can ever fully grasp. That realization excited me and I found myself gathering those leaves in a plastic bag.
In the tanka titled “Wakuraba” by Ariwara no Yukihira, wakuraba refers to a chance meeting. Even though the wakuraba I used as the motif of the surf trunks has a different meaning, I wanted to incorporate the ephemerality and aesthetics of “mono no aware (an empathy towards things)” from the poem in my design. I gathered the diseased leaves from the beech tree as samples in spring, when the weather was great and the trees in the park were seemingly full of life with green leaves growing in abundance. However, most of them were in fact diseased leaves with many tiny holes on them. Seeing that reminded me of great poems by Ariwara no Yukihira and Hikaru Genji.
